Gooey Chocolate Pudding

Serves 4


  • 55g (20z) cocoa powder
  • 115g (40z) caster sugar
  • 600ml (l pint) water
  • Sponge
  • 2 eggs
  • 50ml (2fIoz) milk
  • 225g (80z) plain flour
  • 15g (1/20z) baking powder
  • 15g (l /20z) cocoa powder
  • 115g (40z) butter or margarine
  • 115g (40z) caster sugar


Preheat the oven to 180c/350F/Gas 4 and grease a deep 2.5-2.8 litre 94-5 pint ovenproof dish.

Put the sauce ingredients into a large pan and boil briskly for about 5 mins.

For the sponge, whisk the eggs and milk together in one bowl and sift the dry ingredients together in another. Beat the butter or margarine and sugar in another bowl. Gradually add the egg mixture to the fat and sugar mixture, little at a time, alternate with the dry ingredients. Beat well for one minute. You may need to add a little more milk.

Put into a greased dish and pour the hot sauce over the sponge mixture. Cover with a lid and bake in a preheated oven for 35-40 minutes or when you insert a skewer it comes out clean.

Enjoy with cream or ice-cream
